Hello! Today we went to the Altona culinary class to get a real chef experience. It was easier than I thought it was especially since we had help from our friends. I was partners with Calvin who is also in level 1. We made the chicken burgers and cut the buns. We did all 80 of them. It went by super fast though. I also cracked 30 eggs which i'm now a pro at. When we were battering the chicken my hands got super cold from the eggs. For lunch I tried there cream of tomato soup. It was really flavorful. I ate lunch with there culinary students which was super fun. I hope we get to do it again when they come to our kitchen. ~Heather Penner
Today we went to W.C Miller's culinary class again but this time to actually help out. We all got paired up with different groups. I was put in the dish pit by request of my friend Johanna. I was not very pleased with that request because I wanted to actually make something not put things away and wash dishes, but little did I know that dish pit is a freaking mosh pit instead! Haha just kidding, but we did turn on the music and dance a little. I helped put the dishes in the right bins to get washed in and sometimes there was cookie dough so we snuck and ate some....shhhhh ;) I even helped set up the dinning room where the staff and visitors come and eat. Later when it was lunch time we had a choice of what we wanted I got a ham and cheese sandwich and French fries and a cookie. It was a great experience and I wish we could go back!
Hey. Today we went to W.C. Miller in Altona again and got to help the culinary arts students there make food. I helped make chef and ceasar salads. The chef salad was just romaine lettuce with carrots, celery, egg, ham, and mushrooms. The ceasar salad was also romaine lettuce, but it had baked chicken slices and parmesan cheese in it. we made fresh vinaigrette for the chef salad. I had a good time cooking finally and can hardly wait till we can cook here!
Hola everyone! Today we went to W.C Miller in Altona and we actually did some cooking with their culinary class students. Today was their chicken burger day so it was quite busy in the kitchen we made chicken burgers and cookies and salads and fries it was awesome and a great experience. It felt like we were working in a professional restaurant :) . I saw and learned how they take food orders from people and how they serve it and everything it was just a fantastic experience and I had a great time. For me I was in the baking area and I made a raspberry lemon muffin recipe it was really fun. I cant wait until we get to go into our kitchen here at school and made food:)
Wow, we finally got to work with food today and what a wonderful time we had! Chef Kip was gracious enough to allow our class to participate in preparing lunch for the Miller staff and students. Everyone was assigned to help either in the bakery, salad, sandwich, soup, grilling, deep frying, and meat prep stations. One group was also in charge of setting the dinning room for the teachers and instructors and taking their orders, serving them and cleaning all of the dishes. On the menu was: Chicken Burgers, home made French Fries, Hearty Hamburger soup, Cream of Tomato soup, Pizza Subs, Chef's salad, Chicken Caesar salad, Banana Chocolate Chip muffins, and for dessert Pumpkin Brownies. Yummy! Chicken Burger day is done every Thursday and it is their busiest and most popular lunch day. Unfortunately they ran out of the burgers for us to try:(, but they made grilled ham and cheese sandwiches and offered us what ever else was left over. It was a great opportunity for our students to see what to expect in our kitchen. Learning how time sensitivity, organization, communication, following instructions along with all the safety and sanitation guidelines are a huge part of the program. We can hardly wait until we can implement those same rules into our kitchen and start serving you all. Thanks Chef Kip and students again for your generosity and hospitality!:)
